Advice for Future Students

Always upload the programs used in class, they will be needed for homework assignments and your final project, especially be sure to upload GIMP and Web Expressions.

Of all the web pages my classmate created, I most enjoyed Sarah's, Kate's and Samantha's. All of them used nice colors and their collages were really interesting. I also found that their layouts and picture choices were unique and intriguing.


All the stumper photos were really fun trying to figure out, but my favorite were Alex's, Jordan's and Kate's because they are of some of my favorite places on campus. They are all also aesthetically pleasing pictures, of good quality.

Bad PowerPoint

Of all the other presentations in class I most enjoyed Mary's because of her slide disorder and creativity, Paul's due to his overwhelming ability to distract the viewer and the simple yet effective all white presentation given by Juan, which was very amusing.
These best demonstrated what shouldn't be done in a PowerPoint, what should be included is:

• Title slides and slide titles are important
• They convey the general point of you presentation
  
• Coordinating font and color styles
• Font should be the appropriate size, not too large or small
• Colors should be appropriate and contrasting to enable easy reading
• Spelling and grammar should be correct
• Appropriate pictures and graphics
• Too many graphics can be distracting
• Too few and the presentation is boring
• All should be cited correctly
• Simple and relevant so as to add to the effectiveness of the presentation
• Animations and sounds should be simple and subtle
• Loud noises or effects can take away from the information
• Animations can make your presentation look unprofessional
• Bibliography should be included
• Cite all your sources (even pictures and videos) to ensure the legality of your presentation

Photo Copyright Policies

For certain situations, photos can be used without citing the sources. These pictures should come from sources such as Stock Exchange Photos, which are copyright free. All other photos technically have copyright laws protecting them, these photos which do not have a particular explicit copyright policy, they should still be cited but do not require permission to use. Other photos which have explicit copyright policies or which display that permission must be given for use should be cited and given permission to be used.

Person of the Year/ WEB 2.0

Time's Person of the Year seriously surprised me. I was not expecting an exposition on the multi-functional uses of the Web, much less a compliment about its value as an instrument of the masses exposing our personal lives. Usually large scale companies, such as that which runs Time or any other magazine, ignore the public and focus on the celebrities, whether they're movie stars or Nobel-prize winners. It was very optimistic about the use of Web 2.0 while not really giving an opinion concerning its definite future.

This approach of ambiguity is very similar to the article I read: Will the Web 2.0 Bubble Burst? which highlighted the past technological bubbles, such as the dot-com fiasco, which ultimately burst. It goes on to explain that tech bubble bursts are not ultimately bad things, but instead help the technology to grow. Much like the Time article this article did not give an actual prediction for the future of Web 2.0 but simply stated that if it loses hype it will be for the best.

I agree with both articles, that if the Web 2.0 bubble does pop, it will be for the best, because for now Web 2.0 has been a great tool for the everyday person to broadcast both his/her genius and utter stupidity. I believe that this version of the Web will continue to grow until it is uncontrollable and then like every other empire will inevitably fall.

Microsoft Word Experience

I have been using Word since it was published, and before that I used Works. I am knowledgeable in the workings of the program and know how to access and use the majority of the functions available. The only major tool I have not familiarized myself with is the Templates tool. Possibly I will experiment with that function to use for some of my classes, but besides that I am fairly well acquainted with Microsoft Word.

Introductory Blog

Hi, my name is Natalie. I'm from League City which is considered one of the suburbs of Houston. I am an extreme Beatles fanatic, which was briefly mentioned in my introduction in class but this does not cover the extent of my obsession. If one were to come into my room they would be surrounded by the "Fab Four". So as extraordinary qualities go that aspect of my personality should qualify easily as one. I also enjoy other music, spending time with my friends, reading and painting occasionally. As of now I currently am not involved in any campus activities besides attending classes, although I plan on joining several clubs to involve myself in the community. Finally another personal quality to recognize me by; my exceptionally long hair. So as a summary, I am the hippie girl who loves the Beatles.
In high school I took a computer science class that included numerous programming assignments, none of which I understood. Within my family I am considered computer savvy, but that is a small accomplishment, so basically I can operate a computer on the basic level, but I am not by any means well informed of the more advanced software. So hopefully I will be able to gain quite a lot if general knowledge from this course.
